Frequently Asked Questions About Learning to Fly

Yes. Aviation is one of the safest forms of transportation in the world. Commercial air travel has an extremely low fatality rate; about 1 fatality per 13.7 million passenger flights, thanks to strict regulations, modern aircraft technology, and extensive pilot training.

Even in general aviation (the type of flying used in flight training), safety continues to improve as better training, aircraft systems, and safety programs reduce accident rates each year. Pilots are trained extensively in weather planning, aircraft systems, emergency procedures, and decision-making to ensure safe operations.

As a professional flight school, safety is always our top priority, with structured training programs, certified instructors, and strict FAA standards guiding every flight.

The FAA requires a minimum of 40 flight hours to earn a Private Pilot License (PPL) and approximately 36 for . These hours include:

20 hours of flight training with an instructor
10 hours of solo flight time
Additional time for cross-country flights, night flying, and instrument training

While 40 hours is the minimum, most students typically complete their private pilot training in 50–70 total flight hours depending on how frequently they train and how quickly they progress.

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of training at Nightline Air is that we are an FAA Part 61 flight school, which offers flexibility. Unlike rigid full-time programs, Part 61 training allows you to schedule lessons around your work and family responsibilities. Many students train two to three times per week, while others train on evenings or weekends.

Progress in flight training depends largely on consistency. Students who fly regularly tend to complete their training more efficiently, but our instructors can work with your schedule to help you move forward at a pace that fits your life. Whether your goal is to fly recreationally or pursue an airline career, part-time training is a common and effective path.

Flight training is typically paid for as you go, meaning you pay for each lesson or training block as you complete it, rather than paying the entire program cost upfront. This allows many students to spread the cost of training over time.

Many students use a combination of options to fund their training, including personal savings, monthly budgeting, or aviation financing programs. Our team can also help you understand the expected costs for each stage of training and create a plan that works with your budget.

The best first step is to schedule a discovery flight or speak with one of our instructors, who can explain the training process and provide a clear estimate of the costs involved.

A discovery flight is an introductory flight lesson that allows you to experience flying before committing to full training. During the flight, you will sit in the pilot seat with a certified flight instructor who will explain the aircraft controls and allow you to take the controls during the flight.

Discovery flights are a great way to see what flight training is like, ask questions about becoming a pilot, and determine if aviation is the right path for you. Schedule your introduction flight now!
